BLINDNESS-CAUSING GENE MUTATION IDENTIFIED IN YEMENITE JEWS

A new gene mutation that causes blindness and is carried by one in 23 Jews of Yemenite origin, has been discovered by researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. The discovery, which affects couples that both carry the mutation, will enable the identification of carriers and genetic counseling to high-risk families.

VITAMIN E COULD HELP 40% OF DIABETICS WARD OFF HEART ATTACKS

Vitamin E supplements can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks and related deaths for diabetics who carry a particular version of a gene, according to researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the Clalit Health Services in Israel.

PROF. ELI SPRECHER OF THE RAPPAPORT INSTITUTE AWARDED THE 2007 ALFRED MARCHIONINI RESEARCH AWARD

The 2007 Alfred Marchionini Research Award was presented to Prof. Eli Sprecher of the Rappaport Institute. The prestigious prize, which is awarded once every 5 years to a researcher for his or her excellence in skin research, was presented at the World Congress of Dermatology, which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the beginning of October 2007. Prof. Sprecher’s research focuses on the molecular genetics of inherited skin diseases.

Dr. Rabea Asleh of the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and The Rappaport Family Institute for Research in the Medical Sciences has been chosen as this year’s outstanding young researcher by the American Heart Association. This is the first time that this prestigious prize, which is awarded to one researcher annually, has been won by a young Israeli researcher.

PROFESSOR ISRAEL VLODAVSKY TO BE APPOINTED ICRF PROFESSOR

The ICRF (Israel Cancer Research Fund), a North American organization, solely devoted to supporting cancer research in Israel announced the awarding of one of its Professorships to Professor Israel Vlodavsky of the Rappaport Institute. Since its founding in 1975, the ICRF, a major contributor to Cancer research in Israel has provided 1,628 grants, including 3 Professorships to date, and 3 additional professorships this year, to outstanding Israeli cancer researchers. Many achievements and breakthroughs have been achieved because of the assistance of the ICRF. Two other Rappaport Institute Professors, Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover are also recipients of ICRF Professorships. Professors Hershko and Ciechanover were awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of the ubiquitin system, which led to a groundbreaking new treatment for multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow.

The David Shoham Prize award ceremony took place on June 13th, at the Rappaport Institute. This prize commemorates a central figure in the development of the Institute, Mr. David Shoham z"l. David Shoham saw in the pursuit of scientific excellence a major asset of our country. The six recipients of the 2007 David Shoham z"l award are a true reflection of this vision.

The Mifal Hapayis Foundation's Michael Landow Prize for Science and Research awarded to Prof. Joseph Itskovitz-Eldor for the year 2006

Prof. Joseph Itskovitz-Eldor of the Rappaport Institute has been awarded the Mifal Hapayis Foundation's Michael Landow Prize for Science and Research. The prize valued at NIS 50,000 has been awarded annually since 1976, and this is the second time since 2000 that a member of the Rappaport Institute has received the prize.

The exciting development of a prototype hybrid device for the evaluation of chest pains was announced by Prof. Rafael Beyar of the Rappaport Institute for Medical Research, Haifa, Israel

Prof. Beyar states that this prototype hybrid device combines a computerized tomography coronary angriography (CTCA) with an advanced nuclear camera (single-photon emission computed tomography, or SPECT) for the improved evaluation of patients suffering from chest pains.

Young Faculty Member Wins Krill Prize

Dr. Amir Orian of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine is a recipient of the prestigious Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research from the Wolf Foundation. Orian’s research interests include function and regulation of genetic networks in developmental biology and in cancer. He is a Horev Fellow in the Leaders in Science and Technology Program, and an Alon Fellow.
